Today (December 10) marks the observance of International Human Rights Day, a day commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948 in Paris. The adoption, through General Assembly Resolution 217 A, was a seminal moment in history, establishing a universal set of principles that champion the inherent dignity and equal rights of all human beings.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The Preamble of the UDHR sets the tone for the declaration, recognizing the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family as the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world. The declaration consists of 30 Articles, articulating a range of fundamental human rights and freedoms. The first two articles emphasize the equality and dignity of all human beings and the entitlement to rights and freedoms without discrimination.
